STONES & ROSES
THE "END-OF-OCTOBER-ALMOST-NOVEMBER-2006" NEWSLETTER

The birds and butterflies have all headed south leaving behind the winter birds who are hanging around the feeders looking for handouts and little rodents who are trying to make their winter homes in my winter home! So I searched the internet and came up with a solution... coyote urine! I couldn't get my hands on any of that but did find red fox urine at a hunting store in Michigan. So I doused the soil around the garden shed with red fox urine to keep the chipmunks and mice at bay. They seem to have relocated to spots farther out in the field and we're all happy now.

ATTENTION - WINTER HOMES FOR FERAL CATS NEEDED!

BUILDING BEE AT HOME DEPOT ARRANGED BY ANIMAL OUTREACH

ANIMAL OUTREACH is a group of volunteers who rescue, rehabilitate, and find adoptive homes for stray cats in London. This month they are planning to build 10 winter shelters for feral cats (abandoned, wild cats). This building bee will take place on Thursday, Oct. 26 at the London Southwest Home Depot from 6:30 - 9:30 pm. The lumber will be precut and the volunteers will be putting the pieces together to create homes that these feral cats desperately need.

HELPFUL HINTS FROM PAM

Got these great little hints from Pam C. and although there seems to be a lotta killin' goin' on in these hints (ants, fruit flies, static) they all sound pretty do-able. That chalkboard eraser tip sounds pretty good. I really wish I had that fruit fly tip a few weeks ago when my house was inundated with the little devils!

Reheat Pizza

Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy.
Easy Deviled Eggs

Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done.
Reduce Static Cling

Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not
have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that
cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and static is gone.
Foggy Windshield?

Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser!
Works better than a cloth!
Conditioner

Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a
great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.
Goodbye Fruit Flies

To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2"
with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Get Rid of Ants

Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it
"home," & can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, esp. if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
Reheat refrigerated bread

To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will
keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.

Thanks, Pam.

RED PEPPER JELLY

Sheila had a lot of red peppers left over from a bulk purchase she had made. I took 10 with the idea of making my own red pepper jelly. Good idea. So I slice and I dice and I mix and I stir in the pectin and I fill and seal the jelly jars. And the red pepper jelly doesn't set. So I undo the jelly jars and heat and stir and add more pectin and fill and seal the jelly jars again. And the red pepper jelly doesn't set. So again I undo the jelly jars and heat and heat and stir and heat and stir and heat some more and fill and seal the jelly jars again. The red pepper jelly finally sets. In fact, it sets so good I can't get it out of the jar! So much for making my own red pepper jelly!

One of my writing friends has asked if I would include her new venture in this newsletter.
