A PLACE and A TIME TO DISCUSS BOOKS AND AUTHORS

This month (February ) we will be discussing "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night" by Mark Haddon.
I've linked the book's title to an interesting website that discusses this book and the author.

TAI CHI

There have been Yang Tai Chi lessons going on at the East London Y (Dundas Street East) for the past 4 weeks. Our group has learned (but not mastered) the first 19 steps, some of which are: Grasp Sparrow's Tail, Single Whip, and White Crane Spreads Its Wings. It has been a fun class and we are petitioning to have it continue. Perhaps we'll become regular Tai Chi practitioners .. kinda like those gals in "Calendar Girls".

YOGA

Bonnie Di Bernardo, a YMCA Certified Leader trained in Yoga, is starting a Yoga class up at The Arrhianna Centre in Uniondale (Hwy. 19 north of Thamesford).
Classes start on Thursday, February 8th
Time is from 9:30 am - 10:45am
Cost is $50 for five classes.
Call Bonnie Di Bernardo to register at 519.268.7000

AUTOMOTIVE STUFF
A - REPAIRS
Had to get my autobody repaired last week so took it to Westman Collison for a quote and then took it back for the work.. was very pleased with the work when I picked up the car and very very pleased when I saw how they had detailed the car inside. It had that new car smell again.
Westman Collision is located on Oxford Street East... just east of the Tim Horton's.

B - TRUNK KRUTCH
Jo-Ann brought a strange looking metal rod into the Y one day before Christmas. I ended up buying the metal rod (Jo-Ann should be in sales) and putting it in Gary's Christmas stocking. The men in the family looked at it, discussed it, critiqued it, and then all decided it was a good thing to have tucked away in the trunk for those times when you need to bring home oversized packages. In the picture below, the Trunk Krutch is the red bar holding up the trunk. Go to the web site to read more about it.

HONEY DO THIS, HONEY DO THAT

I've been putting honey on everything lately.... on my Cheerios, in my tea, on my 99-grain toast!
Wild Blueberry Honey, Sweet Clover Honey, Goldenrod Honey.... they've got all these at Clovermead (just north of Aylmer on Hwy. 73).
They have a Honey E-Newsletter and I gleaned this information from their latest one....

Tired? Take a sip!
(from Women's World Magazine)

For energy that lasts hours, drink in a teaspoon of honey. Researchers discovered that the sweet stuff is just as effective at fighting fatigue as the pricey energy gels athletes down. That’s because honey is a low-glycemic food that produces a steady, sustained rise in blood sugar while averting the energy-sapping blood sugar crashes caused by other sweet sources. As a bonus, honey’s antimicrobial properties kill illness- and fatigue- inducing bacteria, according to a study at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.

Healing Honey Brew
Simmer 4 cups of brewed tea with ½ cup of Clovermead Honey, 4 whole cloves and 2 cinnamon sticks.

MINCEMEAT RECIPES
Deb had some great pumpkin-mincemeat bread for a coffee break at her house last week. I asked her for the recipe and I'm going to share it with you here. Now, the trick to her great pumpkin mincemeat bread is that her mincemeat is homemade with green tomatoes. September is too many sleeps away so I might have to make this loaf with the boughten kind of mincemeat.

Green Tomato Mincemeat
16 medium green tomatoes
16 medium apples
4 cups seedless raisins
1/2 cup mixed peel
4 1/2 cups sugar (1/2 white, 1/2 brown)
4 tsp. salt
2/3 cup vinegar
1 cup chopped suet
2 tbsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
Wash tomatoes, remove cores and put through food chopper. Wash, peel, and core apples and put through food chopper. Combine all ingredients in a big pot and bring to a boil. Boil uncovered for 30-40 minutes stirring often. Pour intohot sterilized jars, seal, and process in a hot water bath. If you would rather freeze the mincemeat, cool before filling containers for the freezer.

Mince Pumpkin Loaf
1/2 cup butter (or margarine)
3/4 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 cup canned pumpkin (without spice)
1 cup mincemeat
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. salt
In a large bowl comb ine buter, sugar and eggs. Beat until smooth. Stir in pumpkin and mincemeat.
In another bowl combine the remaining dry ingredients. Pour over the wet batter. Stir just until moistened.
Pour into greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake in 350F oven for 1 hour or until it tests done.
Let loaf stand for 10 minutes... or slice off the end piece and taste test it.

TEXAS, ARIZONA, NEVADA
Off we go to Arizona for a late winter vacation. In a few weeks Gary and I will drive down to the southwest and spend time in places like San Antonio (Texas), Sierra Vista and Tucson and Yuma (Arizona), Laughlin and Vegas (Nevada). We'll be stopping in at the Alamo, Kitt Peak Observatory, Ramsey Canyon Preserve, San Xavier del Bac Mission, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and lots of other places. I'm going shopping for a flute in Tucson and have already connected with a flute maker over the internet. Great sounding flutes... I'm enjoying thinking of how much Gary's going to love this as we travel northward!
