STONES & ROSES
SEPTEMBER 2006 NEWSLETTER

I know, I know.... it isn't September quite yet.
But there are some things happening I wanted to share with you so I had to get the September newsletter out in August.

OUR RESIDENT MONARCH CATERPILLAR/CHRYSALIS/BUTTERFLY

This year I planted a swamp milkweed in a pot at the front door.
Around the middle of August I noticed a small monarch caterpillar munching on the leaves of the plant.
I watched
his/her progress
with interest and excitement as he/she munched away and grew longer and fatter.
And then came the day when he/she left the plant, crawled along the rim of the pot, found the right spot to hang from and within hours turned into a chrysalis.
I have been checking the pot every day, making sure it was protected from the wind, water, and a curious dog's nose (Maverick).
It still hasn't emerged but I'll keep an eye on it and take pictures if I'm lucky enough to be around when that event happens.

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT
Thursday, September 21
I've found a few articles on the 'net about this special event.... a night to reclaim everyone's right to safety in the streets.
Keep an eye on the papers and an ear on the radio stations to get more specific information closer to that date.

"Women are taking back the night across the country this week to reclaim safety in the streets, in our own homes, in our workplaces and in our entire lives.  London Ontario women are doing it on Thursday September 21 at the Victoria Park Bandshell, starting at 6:45 p.m."

I went to Alycin Hayes'  Percussion Workshop on Aug. 4th at The Arrhianna Centre.
The workshop was great!  Thanks, Alycin.
Besides meeting a great bunch of people at the workshop and having fun, I had the chance to see inside The Arrhianna Centre.
This oasis of peace is just up Hwy. 19 at Uniondale.
There are opportunities for Yoga on Wednesday nights, Reiki, and Group Meditations on specific weekends.
Email Heidi, John or Antoinette if you would like to receive their digital newsletter.

HEALTHY EATING

I was reading some healthy magazine this summer and found a short list of the best foods for good health.
Click on the list below to go to an article which tells why each food item is important.

Mayo Clinic's  Top Ten health foods:
Apples, Almonds, Broccoli, Blueberries, Red beans
Salmon, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Vegetable Juice, Wheat Germ
( I can't believe the Mayo Clinic forgot chocolate!)

BEANS, BERRIES & BASIL

On one of the hottest days this summer I decided to "do down" the family favourite dilled yellow beans.
I was sweating so much while I was doing them I think I could have cut back on the salt in the brine.  If you think you would like to make up your own batch of these, email me and I'll send you the directions.

Then Deb called and said she had some extra red currants, did I want some?
I said yep and Deb gave me 10 cups of red currants so I fired up the stove once more and stirred up some red currant/applesauce/pear jam.

This stuff tastes reeeeally good on top of peanut butter on top of toast.

I love the smell of fresh basil and had three bushy plants on the front deck.
Deb (the red currant lady) gave me this idea for storing the basil leaves....
- chop the fresh leaves up into small pieces  (I've got one of those Pampered Chef choppers so this was pretty easy)
- mix them with a little olive oil
- fill up some ice cube trays with the basil/oil mixture
- freeze then pop out the green cubes and store in baggies in the freezer to add to tomato sauces, soups, stews.

Have a great September... hope to see you out and about at some of the above events.

Penny
Always remember you are unique... just like everyone else.

One last idea.... stuff some old socks with scented kitty litter and stick them into those stinky old sneakers overnight to have some less-stinky old sneakers in the morning.
